This circuit hike is considered to be a very challenging 8.8-mile hike that leads to spectacular views from the Old Rag summit. It is estimated to take about 7hrs to complete. Portions of this hike require you to rock scramble. No pets are allowed on this circuit.

How to get there: From Sperryville, Route 211, turn onto Route 522 and follow it south for .8 mile. Turn right on Route 231, follow 8 miles, turn right onto Route 601 and follow signs to the parking area, approximately 3 miles.

From Madison, Route 29 Business, turn onto Route 231 and follow it for 12.8 miles. Turn left onto Route 602. Follow signs for the parking area. Old Rag parking is approximately 3 miles from the turn onto Route 602.

Park Fee: Shenandoah National Park has had a entrance fee since 1939. The current rate of $25 per vehicle, so carpooling is highyl recommended! Thanks to a Federal Fee Demonstration program, 80% of your entrance fee is returned to the park to support previously unfunded maintenance, resource management, visitor services, and trail rehabilitation projects.

Suggested items to bring:

  • Your full supply of water for the day
  • Pack snacks and/or a light lunch
  • Dress appropriately – bring layers and remember gloves and a hat!
  • Rain coat/top layer/sun hat/sunglasses depending on weather forcast
  • Bring a light backpack to put layers in as you shed them
