Dolomites: Trekking the Alta Via 1

Trek hut to hut through the dolomites on the alta via one!
This adventure is rated 4 out of 5 difficulty level. This means that adventurers should be comfortable hiking 10+ miles with elevation gain/loss of 3k+ feet. This trip requires that you carry pack with your necessary items for the week. Your accommodations are in lodges, mountain huts and/or hotels. Highest elevation on the trail does not exceed 9k feet. Training for this adventure should be taken seriously.
Nestled amidst the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Dolomite Mountains, an intrepid group of women adventurers is about to embark on a journey of a lifetime. Our destination? The renowned Alta Via 1, a high-altitude trail that weaves its way through some of the most spectacular alpine scenery on Earth. With each step, we'll be immersed in a world of rugged peaks, lush valleys, and breathtaking vistas, all while challenging our limits and forging bonds that only a trek of this magnitude can inspire. Join us on this 8 day trek as we set out to conquer the Alta Via 1, a path that promises not just a physical challenge, but a deep connection with the untamed beauty of the Dolomites.
Day 1:
Welcome to the Italy!
Arrive in Venice, Italy and meet the rest of the group at our accommodations for the evening. We will be staying at a 4-star hotel located midway between Venice’s historic center and the Venice Marco Polo (VCE) airport. If you are flying in to join us, a few transfers to the hotel will be provided. We will provide you with detailed instructions prior to your departure.
After you get settled into your room, take some time to relax and freshen up before the group meets for our welcome dinner. We will get to know each other over a delicious family style Italian meal tonight.

Day 2:
to cortina d’ampezzo - queen of the Dolomites!
Today is the day - it’s Dolomites Day! Wake up and enjoy a slow morning before you pack your bags. Today we meet our driver for a transfer to Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, aka the Queen of the Dolomites, is a quintessential mountain village in the Italian Alps known for its incredible landscapes, heritage and many sporting activities. When we arrive we will check into our hotel and drop our luggage. You will have time to enjoy lunch in the city before meeting with our guide around for a gear check. After that you will have free time to explore the city’s piazzas, shops, enjoy dinner and more before getting a good night’s rest. Make sure to have your backpack ready to go before bed because we hit the trail straight away in the morning. YAY! Your additional piece of luggage (one medium sized suitcase) can be stored by our guide for the duration of the trek.

Day 3:
To The Mountains We Must Go!
Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) to Pederü
Wake up and enjoy a hearty breakfast before our first full day on the trail. Today will start with a short taxi ride from our hotel to the starting point of the hike, the famous Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee). After a quick photo or two we’ll escape the crowds and start the first climb of the day on the opposite side of the lake. The path is steady but never too steep allowing us to take in the beautiful views of the lake below. A short exposed section will lead to a pass at 2400m/7874ft, just above Rifugio Biella where we will stop for a lunch break and soak in the view.
The rest of the stage continues easily along wide and smooth tracks across open terrain. You will pass Rifugio Sennes, a great opportunity to stop for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. After that, it’s all downhill. We have one last steep section to reach Rifugio Pedero, our home for the night.
Every evening a delicious dinner will be prepared and provided for us as a group at the rifugio so once we arrive it’s time to sit back, take off your shoes, and relax while soaking in the views!

Day 4:

Pederü to Rifugio Scotoni
Rise and shine, it’s adventure time! Wake up, pack your bag and enjoy breakfast before we hit the trail. Today we start by climbing up through the forest as we make our way to Rifugio Fanes, a great spot for a second morning coffee. From here we will continue on forest roads and paths all the way to the main Fanes plateau, we will pass Lago di Limo and continue to climb gradually to the Forcella del Lago (2486m), a very narrow mountain pass.
The descent from here is not to be underestimated, the path is very good but also very steep and the terrain is loose, so concentration is required. Once at the bottom of the descent you’ll have some time to relax by the shores of Lago Lagazuoi and even enjoy a quick dip. From here we have one more short hike to conquer before arriving at the refuge for the night where it’s time to indulge in some pasta, wine and relaxation time!

Day 5:
On historical WWI paths
Rifugio Scotoni to Rifugio Averau
Another day, another adventure! After we have enjoyed breakfast today, we’ll grab our packs and begin our ascent to the stunning Lagazuoi, a viewpoint for the whole Dolomites!
From here we begin to descend to the very busy Falzarego Pass. This used to be the front line between Italy and the Austro Hungarian Empire during WWI, and signs of the war are still visible all around.
Once at the pass we’ll climb up the other side to a beautiful secluded mountain lake, a perfect spot to rest and enjoy a delicious lunch. From here we continue uphill on a very rocky path to Forcella Averau and the nearby Rifugio Averau. We’re not quite there yet, as our hut is another short climb away, perched at the top of the hill. Once we arrive, we’ll be able to relax and enjoy a night in a very traditional refuge, the oldest in the whole of the Dolomites!

Day 6:
The heart of the Dolomites
Rifugio Averau to Passo Staulanza
Wake up surrounded by the beautiful Dolomites and enjoy coffee and breakfast before heading out for the day. Today we head towards the busy Passo Giau, a mountain pass with cars, motorbikes and bicycles. After crossing the road we will disappear once again in the forest as we start walking on a beautiful but slightly more technical section of the route. After tackling a few rocky steps and a steep but short uphill section we’ll be rewarded with stunning views as you arrive to Forcella Giau, quickly followed by Forcella Ambrizzola and Forcella Col Duro.
Next we begin to descend to the other side on a wide gentle track as we make our way towards Rifugio Città di Fiume. This is a lovely spot for a break to enjoy a cup of coffee and snack before we head into the last section of the day. To reach our final destination at Passo Staulanza, we have one last traverse at the foot of Monte Pelmo. This is one of the most impressive mountains in the Dolomites and the first to be climbed by Irish mountaineer John Ball. After a few rocky steps and a steep muddy descent in the woods, we’ll reach our hut for the night.
We’ll kick off our boots, drop our packs and celebrate today’s accomplishments with a refreshing drink and beautiful views. Before we snuggle into our beds for the evening, we’ll enjoy dinner provided by our hosts at this family-run rifugio.

Day 7:
The wall of all walls - the Civetta range
Passo Staulanza to Rifugio Vazzoler
Buongiorno aka Good Morning! It’s going to be a beautiful day, and today’s beauty comes with some challenge.
Today we begin at Passo Staulanza and from here we will walk along a short road section followed by a wide forest road. The path will quickly get steeper, leading us to the very picturesque Rifugio Coldai, just above 2200 meters or 7,218 feet.
After a mandatory coffee and treat break, we will continue on the path towards the stunning Lago Coldai which reflects the steep rock walls above. As we continue along, we will meet one of the most famous mountains in the Dolomites, Monte Civetta. Otherwise known as “the wall of all walls”, this is an iconic sheer limestone cliff rich in mountaineering history and one of the most iconic faces in the entire region.
We know it will be hard to take your eyes away from these impressive views, however keep in mind the trail requires our attention. It is quite rocky in places, and we might need to slow down a bit, but we promise you that with views like this there is no rush to get away from this place!
Once we reach the end of the north-west face of Civetta, we’ll join a wider track that will lead us quickly to Rifugio Vazzoler, your home for the night, and you are in for a treat! This is guaranteed to be the best atmosphere on the AV1!

Day 8:
Discover the dolomites backcountry
Rifugio Vazzoler to Rifugio Tomé
Another magical day in the Dolomites awaits! Enjoy breakfast, coffee and our last views from Rifugio Vazzoler before we make our way towards Rifugio Tomé.
We’ll start the day by losing some elevation, walking on a 4x4 track leading towards the valley. Before too long, though, you’ll take a side path underneath the cliffs of the Moiazza mountain range, a continuation of the Civetta range. This section begins with steep muddy paths to boulder fields and scree slopes, and it will definitely require some extra care, attention and patience. We will make our way through one last exposed section between Forcella Col d’Ors and Forcella del Camp (not ideal for those who feel uncomfortable with heights) before the path easies off a bit and traverses over to Rifugio Carestiato.
We will enjoy a break at the rifugio before we begin the last easier section to Passo Duran and Rifugio Tomé, our cozy overnight stop. We will enjoy dinner together before resting our heads for the evening.

Day 9:
The wild side of the Dolomites
Rifugio Tomé to Rifugio Pian de Fontana
After a delicious breakfast while enjoying the views, it’s time to load our packs and slip on our boots for today’s adventure!
Our journey takes us to the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park today, and we’ll notice a change of scenery. Although the big limestone walls are still there, this side of the Dolomites is much wilder and feels more remote than what we have just experienced.
We begin the day with a short road section before we enter the woods. A forest of beech trees will surround us as we work our way up the trail reaching the tree line. Here we will hike across the open slope towards Rifugio Pramperet where we will rest and enjoy a coffee and snack while soaking up all the magic of this place.
From here we start the main climb of the day making our way up to Forcella de Zita Sud pass making way to a beautiful wild valley. Keep your eyes open here, it’s wildlife territory!
From the top of the pass, we’ll start our descent down a very steep section arriving at our hut for the evening. Once we arrive at Pian de Fontana, we’ll kick off our boots and enjoy the views of this beautiful and unique location with a celebratory drink as this is our final night on the trail.

Day 10:
Back to CIVILIZATION
Rifugio Pian de Fontana to La Pissa to Belluno
Wake up and enjoy coffee as you soak in those magnificent views. Today we pack up one last time after breakfast and make our way back towards civilization.
From Pian de Fontana we have a short descent followed by one last climb to a col because we wouldn’t want to end our hike without one last climb, right? After a nice warm up, we will begin our descent down to the valley towards Rifugio Bianchet.
We will enjoy a stop here for one last chance to sip on a mountain coffee and indulge in a sweet treat. After leaving the rifugio, the path widens leading us down to a main valley road where our transfer to Belluno will be waiting for us.
Once we arrive in Belluno, we will enjoy one last dinner together after checking into our accommodations for the evening.

Day 11:

Wake up and enjoy a delicious breakfast before we check out and make our way to the Venice Marco Polo (VCE) airport today. The transfer will arrive at the airport approximately mid day. If you would like to be included in the airport transfer from Bellyno, your flight should be booked for 2 p.m. or later.

Krystyna Gonzalez
Krystyna, a native to southern New Mexico and one who loves exploring the land of enchantment through exploring the outdoors and art of photography. By trade she is a mental health therapist, but by heart is an outdoor chica which allows her to bring both worlds together to heal and to provide a safe space for others as well. She is a big advocate of solo hiking and empowering other women to also try solo outdoor activities, with the right knowledge and preparation.
Krystyna first joined Women Who Explore in 2020 and loves to take women out hiking, camping, backpacking, ice skating, bouldering, meet and greets and many other fun events. She is excited to lead international trips where her adventurous heart leads her.

This trip requires a minimum number of ladies to register in order for it to be confirmed. Once the trip reaches the minimum participant number, you will receive a trip confirmation email and a link to be added a private Facebook group just for trip guests. The Alta Via 1 is amongst the best and most famous multi-day treks in Europe. This tour is suitable for people with previous trekking experience who want to trek through some of the most beautiful and renowned places in the Italian Dolomites. It is not suitable for beginner hikers, people who struggle on uneven and unstable terrain or people with severe fear of heights. You will be walking for long days with a heavy bag, carrying all your gear, so a good level of fitness is required. Training for this trip will be required.
