About this Adventure...

Located just off the West Coast of Vancouver Island, BC, above Tofino and below Cape Scott Provincial Park, the Nookta Trail is one of the most remote and beautiful hikes available in British Columbia. This 40 km & 5 day hike requires a float plane on to the island to start the hike and a historical boat ride off.

On our float plane ride over to Starfish Lagoon we should have the opportunity to view the entirety of the hike from the float plane window before touching down and rolling up our pants to unload. From that point on we will hike from North-South along the South-West corner of Nootka Island. There is an abundance of wildlife to be seen along the trail, including the remarkable comeback story sea otters that we are almost wiped out of existence during colonial trade times, and are only now just making a comeback to BC’s coastline.

Additional notes

The hiking along this trail is mostly beach hiking, with a little bit of pea-gravel and rock walking, and an few small forest sections. Calvin Falls and Maquinna Point are highlights along the trail. While the Mowachaht / Muchalat First Nations village of Yuquot (Friendly Cove) is a perfect way to end the remote backcountry experience. Here, we get to explore some of the artifacts of the oldest established First Nations trading village and remnants left behind by the Europeans when Captain James Cook first landed here in BC to establish the sea otter pelt trade.

Our first day and last day of hiking are very short distances to accommodate for the float plane and boat ride out as well as the transportation to and from our start point of Nanaimo, BC. The 3 middle days you can expect full days of hiking of about 11-13 km’s with setting up camp in non-established campsites in the evening. If you are looking for a camping experience with outhouses, bear caches and tent pads, this hike is not for you! Out on Nootka Island we are responsible to establish our own site each evening and make sure we leave each area cleaner than when we arrived.

Departing from, and finishing in Nanaimo, BC this package includes transportation, a float plane ride on and off Nootka Island, 5 days of guided hiking, Certified ACMG guides, all your meals on the trail, all your First Nation land fees, a tent to use free of charge, a post trip celebration meal, and one memory of a lifetime!
